The "...Sorry you had a bad experience with TR1! The "Tomb Raider Automated Fix" (there's a Steam Guide for it) is a good option to play the game outside of DOSBOX. The controls are definitely atypical and methodical, but can be satisfyingly precise, in the sense that the game's puzzles/tasks are designed around those controls. For example, that first "traversal puzzle" you mentioned has a pretty clean solution: one sideways jump (immediately after pulling the lever), followed by one more jump, onto the final platform (the one where the newly opened door is located).
